Audible.co.uk is delighted to announce that Avengers star Tom Hiddleston has narrated the audiobook of J.G. Ballard’s High Rise ahead of the release of a highly anticipated film of the critically acclaimed novel.
Hiddleston, who is known to millions worldwide for his role as the evil god Loki in the blockbuster Thor and Avengers movies, has lent his voice to this first UK audiobook adaptation of High Rise, which was published in 1975.
High Rise is an unnerving dystopian tale of life in a modern tower block falling into disarray. Within the concealing walls of an elegant forty-storey tower block, the affluent tenants are hell-bent on an orgy of destruction. Cocktail parties degenerate into marauding attacks on ‘enemy’ floors and the once-luxurious amenities become an arena for riots and technological mayhem.
The audiobook of High Rise arrives as interest in the book and J.G. Ballard’s work reaches a new peak. The film adaptation of High Rise, directed by Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers) will be released in September 2015, starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss.

Tom Hiddleston said: “I spent last summer holed up as Dr Laing on the 25th floor of the “High Rise”, as brought to life on film by Ben Wheatley and Amy Jump. The book was always, necessarily, our corner-stone. Ahead of the release of the film, it was great to go back to J. G. Ballard’s original text and to read it aloud. Ballard was prescient about so many things: our seduction by (and reliance on) technology; our attempted colonisation of the sky, and his particular, distinguishing implication that modern civilisation is perhaps only a few neighbourly disagreements away from collapse and chaos”.
Laurence Howell, Director of Content at Audible.co.uk said: “We are very excited to have Tom on board as narrator for High Rise. He’s a widely respected and hugely popular name, and with the film adaptation set to be a big hit this autumn, Tom was the perfect person to bring the audiobook to life. We’re thrilled with the results and hope our listeners will be too.”
High Rise narrated by Tom Hiddleston is available for pre-order now and will be released on sale on Thursday 26th March.
