Keith B Walters introduces us to the world of Detective Inspector George Haven with this winning collection of short crime stories. Set against the backdrop of London and the south east, Deadline portrays a cop who mixes by-the-book with bend the rules when circumstances dictate. This collection contains some hugely impressive writing, exhibiting beautifully crafted detail and strong characterisation. Hard to pick out a favourite story, but ‘The Scorched Man’ fair bristles with tension, while the final story in this collection will simply leave you wanting to read more of Haven. Hopefully, we won’t have long to wait.
This book is a collection of short crime stories involving protagonist DI George Haven. I love the name and already have some sort of fuzzy picture of him in my head, formed simply by his name.
The stories are short and at times, I felt too short for the story actually being told. This indicates that Walters has a vast amount of ideas for this character but needs to give him the room to move and explore both himself and the events and crimes around him.
A great character taster for a DI I do believe is in the process of having his own larger space created. I’ll be interested to see DI George Haven works a case given time.
