Tommy V Cancer #tommyvcancer

Monday, June 20th 2016

Life can be scary – we all pretty much know that and, as we all get older, sometimes it gets really scary.

But, we prepare, we go on roller-coasters (well I don’t, but that’s because I’m a wimp), we go to see scary movies and, probably most importantly of all, we read scary books. All of those things are cathartic and help us grow and prepare for stuff.

And that’s why I’m more than happy to spread the word about Tommy Donbavand, his fantastic books, and his fight against one of life’s real monsters.

Like many teenagers, my first memories of being really excited by books came from horror books and, in particular, those of Stephen King.…

Challenge 30 – get author feedback or editorial services for a great price and help a good cause too

Tuesday, December 22nd 2015

You may have seen a few mentions about this on Twitter, as Avon’s Editorial Director Helen Huthwaite (seen below as a Christmas pudding) has been putting herself through monstrous challenges this year in a bid to raise £30,000 for her charity S.A.L.V.E., which aims to build a house for children living on the streets in Uganda. ‘Challenge 30’ means she has been running marathons, swimming in lakes, competing in triathlons and more, and putting the rest of Team Avon to shame.

This Christmas, she’s offering a pretty special opportunity for writers.

She’s compiled a BRILLIANT list of agents, authors and Editors, who are offering their services as a gift to aspiring writers.…

Fiction extract: Death Night by Todd Ritter

Monday, June 22nd 2015

Then the sirens started, so distant and muffled that Kat at first thought they were just another part of the dream. But they continued, even after Henry, the table and the paper all vanished. That’s when she knew they were real.

Kat listened without opening her eyes. Although they were far away, she could tell the sirens belonged to the fire department and not her police force. The ones on the firetrucks were louder and deeper — the baritones to her patrol cars’ tenor.

Sliding out of bed, she went to the window and saw the reason for the sirens — a fire, glowing orange and eerie in the distance.…

AMOK – From Audible – A New Original Audio Drama – Psychological Thriller

Sunday, May 10th 2015

I was very pleased to be offered the chance (thanks to Midas PR) to try out this a brand new release from, starring Rafe Spall (Prometheus and Life of Pi), Adrian Lester (Hustle and Merlin) and Natasha McElhone (Californication and The Truman Show). If you enjoyed The Child, you’ll love AMOK, which is from the same author, bestselling novelist Sebastian Fitzek.

Narrated by Robert Glenister, along with a full cast, soundtrack and some great sound effects along the way, I thoroughly enjoyed the eight hours running time like a fine dvd box set -indeed, I did find the depth of story and compelling characters akin in many ways to the best of the finest Nordic Noir we enjoy on the tv.…

A message from Calum Kerr
Director, National Flash-Fiction Day

Hello everyone,

Well, here in the UK it is Election Day. I’m just about to head out to vote and I urge you to do the same. (If I said I don’t care who you vote for, I’d be lying – of course I care – but whoever it is, I just think you should vote.)

Once you’ve written your X in the box, maybe it’s time to sit down and use even more letters to create something almost as wonderful as a functioning democracy. I’m talking, of course, about flash-fictions!

Our Anthology is still open for submissions.…

(image from Waking the Dead – via BFI website).

I’ve just spotted this on the BFI website and am sure it’ll be of interest to crime fiction and TV fans and, in particular, to those who have visited or are to visit the excellent ‘Forensics’ exhibition at the Wellcome Collection:

In conjunction with Wellcome Collection’s free exhibition ‘Forensics: The anatomy of crime’, BFI Southbank presents a special weekend of screenings and events looking at how advances in forensic science have been reflected in TV crime drama, and how factual TV programmes have reported on the world and work of forensic scientists.…

Day One of #LondonBookFair and Sofa-so-good

Tuesday, April 14th 2015

I have just had one of the busiest and most rewarding days out I can remember.

I’ve walked miles, met friends old and new and done nothing but been absorbed in the world of books for the entire day.

I was a little stunned at the size of some of the furniture there though !

(I think the Alice in Wonderland theme had spread across Olympia in parts).

Really looking forward to the next two days at the fair, but dreading the return to my real job on Friday – so hoping the clock runs really slow until then – don’t want to be running around like that white rabbit!…
