Fergusson and Morpurgo Win Leading Historical Fiction Awards in Harrogate

First time author Ben Fergusson has scooped the Historical Writers’ Association 2015 Debut Crown Award for new historical fiction with The Spring of Kasper Meier.
Ben was presented with the coveted award worth £2,000 by broadcaster Mark Lawson at the opening night of the Harrogate History Festival (October 22) at the Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate.

The event, hosted by Harrogate International Festivals, also saw War Horse author Michael Morpurgo, who has written more than 130 books for children, receive the Outstanding Contribution to Historical Fiction Award.
Morpurgo said: “I am delighted and honoured to be presented with this special Award. History is the foundation of our society, who we are and where we are going, and it is crucial that we pass this on to our young people.…

I took on the challenge of The Hunt in two bursts of frenetic reading – with a necessary pause to refuel on the energy snacks and drinks, plus a change of footwear, required to get me through.

#LondonBookFair Genre spotlight: Crime and Thrillers

As part of the Author HQ strand of events at the London Book Fair today, I was pleased to see that Crime and Thrillers were given a genre panel.
Chaired by Justine Solomons of BytetheBook.com, the panel consisted of agent Oli Munson, Sarah Hodgson of Harper Collins and Journalist and reviewer Jake Kerridge.
It was a very informative panel and clearly all were essentially looking for similar things in new authors and books – something that grips them, a great style and a good voice. This was described by Jake Kerridge as something of a ‘speed-dating’ technique which he agreed with the rest of the panel as being those first few pages where there really has to be something to like or love to keep the interest going.…

Today, The London Book Fair 2015 opened its doors to new home, Olympia, with Mary Berry as Guest of Honour at the official Opening Ceremony. Dignitaries and press came together to enjoy speeches from representatives across the globe, including His Highness, Sheikh Sultan Al-Qasimi and Brian Murray, President and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide.
Tibor Navracsics, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture Youth and Sport spoke on behalf of Europe, and announced the winners of the European Union Prize for Literature.…
